Story Behind the Art

Three riders cross a pale road with their gifts held before them. The Magi Followed the Star is inspired by Matthew 2:1–12, where wise men from the east come to worship Jesus. This work follows the familiar artistic tradition of three Magi. Its layered shapes and richly colored robes give the story a warm, storybook character.

Each rider has a distinct place in the procession. Blue, red, and olive garments stand against rust-colored hills, while golden vessels shine in their hands. Their camels move in a steady line from left to right. Above them, one large star anchors a sky made of deep blue, paper-like layers.

The small town at the upper right gives their travel a clear destination. Dark trees and leaves frame the road without crowding the figures. Patterned saddle cloths and tasseled edges reward a closer look. Those decorative details make the scene inviting for both children learning the account and adults who enjoy its familiar Christmas symbols.

Matthew places the wise men's joy and worship at the heart of their visit. Their treasures matter because of the child to whom they are offered.
