Story Behind the Art

“Apart to Pray” shows the quiet moment described in Matthew 14:23. After feeding the multitude, Jesus sends His disciples ahead, dismisses the crowd, and goes up the mountain alone to pray. Matthew tells us that He withdrew and prayed, but it does not record His posture or the details of the landscape. This scene is a devotional interpretation rather than a literal reconstruction. Its focus is the Savior’s deliberate communion with His Father in the middle of demanding ministry.

I painted the Savior with His face lifted and His hands open under a broad, luminous sky. The surrounding mountains and small white flowers quiet the scene, while the open space separates Him from the crowd He has just served. In the horizontal composition, the landscape makes His solitude feel expansive. In the vertical composition, the eye rises with His face and hands toward heaven. The pale light is symbolic rather than a precise depiction of evening, expressing the clarity and reverence of a moment set apart for prayer.

It is easy to let necessary work, service, and care for other people fill every open space. This passage does not present prayer as an escape from responsibility, and it does not promise that solitude will remove every storm. The disciples will soon face wind and waves. Instead, Jesus shows a holy rhythm: compassion for the crowd, faithful action, and time alone with the Father. His example teaches me that quiet prayer is part of faithful service. Prayer helps return the heart to the One from whom strength and direction come.

“Apart to Pray” may be especially powerful for someone carrying a demanding calling, beginning a season of ministry, or wanting to renew a habit of prayer. Because each piece is individually finished, this option requires additional creation time. The finished piece is a hand-finished fine art reproduction, not an original painting.
