One thing I love most about this painting is the movement. The shattered chains, the open hands, and the joy on the man’s face all work together to show that the Savior's freedom is real and life-changing. To me, that is the gospel message at the center of John 8:36. Jesus Christ has power over sin, fear, shame, addiction, sorrow, and every burden that keeps us from peace.
I think many of us know what it feels like to carry something heavy for too long. Sometimes the chains in our lives are easy to see, and sometimes they are hidden deep in the heart.
