Special Artist’s Note: “Light of Spring” is part of an experimental project made using a combination of digital drawing in Adobe Photoshop, an AI generated base layer made with Adobe Firefly, and traditional acrylic painting on canvas. Adobe Firefly is generally regarded as a safe and ethical AI tool, because all images used to train the model are fully licensed with compensation paid to contributing artists.
The project started as my attempt to determine if it is possible for a Christian artist to harmonize traditional artistic techniques with new technology to create art that glorifies God. However, the project took on greater significance as I saw debates and controversies unfold in the Christian art world.
After a great deal of prayer and research, I’m stepping out in faith with “Light of Spring” to call for unity and a renewed focus on the gospel in the Christian art community. I stand with the Apostle Paul, who said, “The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice” (Philippians 1:18b). The message is what matters. The tools and techniques used to make an image should not matter.
As Christian artists, we should aspire to be holy and set apart, and not be conformed to the ways of worldly artists who approach AI technology with fear, prejudice, greed, division, and selfish ambition. Images made with AI continue to advance, to the point that it is already impossible in many cases to distinguish between images made with AI and images made by human artists using traditional techniques. I believe that rejoicing in Christ and in the gospel alone will become increasingly important as generative AI technology continues to advance.
In recognition of the special nature of the project, I am offering “Light of Spring” at a reduced price for any brothers and sisters who want to join me in calling for unity and for rejoicing that the gospel is preached, regardless of how an image was made.
