Story Behind the Art

The Annunciation brings us to Mary's doorway as Gabriel arrives with news from God. Luke 1:26–38 tells of the promise that she will bear Jesus, the Son of the Highest. Here, Mary pauses beside a loom. Her hand rests over her heart as she turns toward the light.

Warm gold enters the small room, touching cream cloth and the simple wooden beams. Gabriel stands at the threshold in pale robes. The meeting feels close and personal. Mary's steady gaze gives us a place to linger with her response, before the manger and the celebrations that follow.

The loom gives this scene the feel of an ordinary day. Work is still waiting beside her, yet her attention has turned to God's word. That is part of the beauty of this account. The Lord's promise reaches a real person, in a real place, and asks for her trust.

• Choose Standard or Hand Embellished. For the Hand Embellished finish, Chris applies acrylic paint and gel medium to selected areas of the print. This is a hand-finished fine art reproduction.
