“unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem” — Luke 2:4 (KJV, excerpt)

Story Behind the Art

Luke tells us that Joseph went to Bethlehem, the city of David, with Mary. Within that simple account lies the expectation of the Savior's birth. Guided to Bethlehem #2 turns toward the final stretch of the road, with the town ahead and a quiet evening sky above.

Mary rides a donkey while Joseph walks beside her with his staff. Their backs face the viewer, drawing us into the same direction of travel. A pale path winds through grasses and stones toward a cluster of warm buildings. Lavender clouds soften the blue sky, and a small star shines over the distant town.

The donkey, road, and evening setting are artistic details that help us reflect on the biblical account. The heart of the scene is the shared step forward. Mary and Joseph continue toward the place where Jesus will be born, surrounded by the ordinary land and light of a quiet day drawing to its close.

The gentle colors bring calm to a living room, bedroom, or entryway. The horizontal composition works well above a console or other broad wall space, where the curve of the road can lead the eye toward Bethlehem. It also offers a lovely Christmas gift for a family who enjoys reading the Nativity story together.

Bring Guided to Bethlehem #2 into your home as part of the season's welcome. Choose the size and finish that fit your space, and make room for this quiet view of Mary and Joseph approaching the Savior's birthplace.
