Story Behind the Art

“The Veil Was Torn” is inspired by Matthew 27:50-51. At the moment Jesus yields up His spirit, Matthew records that the veil of the temple is torn in two from top to bottom. The Gospel gives no visual description of its color, pattern, movement, or the light beyond it, so this painting is symbolic rather than a historical reconstruction. 

I painted the veil as a field of weight and contrast. Deep blue gathers on one side, crimson on the other, their folds suggesting fabric that once formed a formidable boundary. Along the torn edges, loose threads catch white and gold light. The opening is bright but not fully explained. It draws the eye forward without turning the mystery into a literal picture of heaven. Beneath it, pale architectural forms remain quiet and small. The composition allows darkness, sacrifice, fracture, and radiance to meet in a single vertical movement.

For Christians, the torn veil has long been received as a sign of what Christ’s sacrifice accomplishes: through Him, we are invited to draw near to God with faith. Hebrews 10:19-22 gives language to that confidence. The image arises from within Scripture’s sacred story and asks us to approach both the Atonement and the biblical setting with humility. Grace is best understood here as a call to come near with a sincere heart.

“The Veil Was Torn” may be especially powerful during Lent, Holy Week, Good Friday, or Easter, and in a church office, chapel, prayer room, or home where quiet reflection is welcomed.
